Has anyone considered changing or dropping their short term disability benefit since EI increased sick benefits to 26 weeks?

We actually don’t have an STD benefit–instead we have sick leave hours that accrue monthly from date of hire. These are available for employees to use at their discretion, with the ability to let the accrual grow to help offset short-term time off.

I encourage our Employees to use the STD and save the EI incase the leave gets more serious or they need the EI for something else.

No we have not, taking the burden off of employment insurance is important. Also, the EI reduction incentive is a benefit to employers and employees.

We actually increased our STD not long ago. We find it helps our employees more financially as they receive a greater benefit, and there is no waiting period to obtain benefits. Also, we are able to take part in the reduced Employer EI rate because of our increased STD benefit.

No, our employees receive a greater benefit with STD and the company participates in the reduced EI program. A win, win.
